Service description
Companies may be interested in how they compare in terms of sustainability performance against their peers. Identifying strengths and weaknesses in the sustainability performance is the first step towards strengthening customer and investor relations and towards improvement of shareholder value.
SAM Research offers both listed and unlisted companies of any size the SAM Company Benchmarking Service. This service provides companies with detailed information on their corporate sustainability performance versus their respective industry. Being benchmarked against the industry average as well as against the leading companies worldwide offers valuable insights into strengths and weaknesses towards sustainability challenges.
Service offering
The SAM Company Benchmarking Service comprises the following modules.
1. One-off Sustainability Assessment with Feedback Report
Companies that accept SAM’s yearly invitation to participate in SAM’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment receive a Feedback Report comparing the company’s sustainability performance versus their respective industry. SAM offers the same service to companies that declined the invitation or were not invited. The company would have to complete SAM’s online questionnaire and provide additional documents. The analysis is conducted using the industry specific questionnaire and results will be benchmarked against companies in the same industry group. SAM uses Dow Jones Industry Classification.
Following SAM’s analysis of the industry specific questionnaire and a detailed analysis of the Media & Stakeholder Assessment (MSA) the company receives a detailed one-page Feedback Report with sustainability scores for each assessment criterion on the best company, the industry average and the weakest company.
The report also includes a one-hour telephone conference with the analyst to explain key findings.
2. Company Benchmarking Report
Companies that have been assessed by SAM, either via the yearly invitation or via the one-off assessment described above, may request more detailed information than is provided by the Feedback Report. SAM offers a Company Benchmarking Report, which contains a description of the company’s sustainability performance and benchmarks the results against the industry sector average and best scores while providing best-in-class examples. It consists of the following components.
- Overview sustainability & value creation
- Industry specific sustainability trends and drivers
- Benchmarking of company results
- Characteristics of Best-in-Class/Best-in-Industry
The Company Benchmarking Report also includes a one-hour telephone conference with the analyst to explain key findings.
